Luke lives in the ward with his partner and two children. He moved to Portsmouth from London, drawn by the great shops, restaurants and pubs on Albert Road, the leisure facilities on the sea front and the great naval history of the city. Since settling in the area he and his family have been made to feel very welcome.

Luke says: ‘I would like to give something back by representing the ward on the city council and working to make the area even better. When I lived in London I saw what a Labour council could do and I believe that a Labour council in Portsmouth would make the area better for everyone.’

During his career he’s worked in policy, campaigning and project management roles for various charities. His priorities for the ward are to focus on education, health, housing and the local economy.

He says: ‘I want to see our great local schools receive the funding they need for the best quality education for our children. My children attend local schools and I have seen the impact of cuts. I want the schools to not have to worry about keeping teachers or making parents pay for things that should be free. Similarly, I fear that local health services are under threat. I have received great services from both local GPs and the Queen Alexandra Hospital, but I fear that Tory spending cuts will threaten these.’

The damaging consequences of cuts to public services and the limits of meeting people’s needs in the city are of great concern and he believes the increase in homelessness, and lack of affordable or social housing, is particularly worrying:

‘When I worked for a housing and homelessness charity I saw firsthand the impact of poor housing on families. I would like to see the council taking an active role in improving the quality of private rented and local authority housing, and work to ensure the local area continues to have a mix of people.’ – Luke Evans

He also values the role local businesses play in the area and is keen to support them to help them develop further. Luke says: ‘I would like to see Portsmouth City Council improve the local area by providing more support to local businesses so they can prosper and create more jobs for local people.’

Luke is keen to use his skills and experience to help improve the lives of the people living and working in the ward. He says: ‘Portsmouth is a great place to live and I want the chance to make it even better.’
